Is It Time for a Makeover?

(Catherine M. Farnes)

You know the routine.
You're standing in front of a mirror with a big event — maybe your piano recital, first date or major family gathering — looming in the near future. As you stare, all you notice is that your appearance lacks something.

Your hair is too long, too short, too curly, not wavy enough, dull, unstylish, the wrong color or fried. Your eyes look lifeless, probably because you lost sleep from worrying about what you're going to wear today. And then of course there are those minor imperfections of your complexion.

Your solution . . . a makeover. Only with a change to your appearance will you arrive at your event feeling radiant, beautiful and accepted.

Sound Familiar?
Girls are seldom satisfied with the way they look, and the world knows it. People build entire careers out of a woman's desire for improvement.

But what happens when the mirror you're looking at reflects your heart? What about the character imperfections — things that are so woven into your personality that you can't even identify them individually? Does the beauty profile of your life lack something? Peace, maybe? Joy? Purpose? Contentment?

Then it's time for a real makeover. An internal makeover.

But where do you go for that?

God has made only one place in the universe for us to truly shed our sins — and that's with His blood. If you're looking for a life makeover that doesn't have to be done again and again, this is the first step. Repent of your sins and ask Christ to forgive you. A good, clean foundation in Christ is everything (Colossians 1:19-23).

Once you've visited the Cross of Christ and are "without blemish and free from accusation," it's time to begin applying, one at a time, the layers and shades of your new self — with God teaching you the steps. Check out Romans 12:1-2.

Just as we invest in the proper tools to maintain our natural beauty — the right brush, the most complimentary makeup, the clothes that look best on us, whitening toothpaste, exercise equipment, etc. — we must invest in the tools that'll enable us to continually "put off" the unwanted aspects of our character and "put on" Christlikeness (Colossians 3:5-17).

• Start with a Bible, and make time to read and study it.

• Attend a church where you'll grow closer to God.

• Pray. If you want to leave a hair salon with a workable, current and attractive hairstyle, you communicate with the stylist, right? In the same way, you've gotta communicate with God if you want to truly walk out your faith in a way that is workable, attractive and current.

• Adhere to guidelines. Have you ever chosen not to eat something because it would make you break out or give you bad breath? That's called discipline, and we need it in our pursuit of inner beauty, too. Sin is attractive and desirable, just like a candy bar or double scoop of ice cream. It's waiting to be sampled and tasted.

When you want to indulge in sin — taking in that inappropriate movie, song, book, Web site or computer game; compromising a lifestyle choice; holding on to anger; telling a lie that'd get you out of trouble; being bitter or saying a cutting remark — think about what it'll do to your life, just as you think about what that onion will do to your breath.

In fact, think about it more. Choose not to indulge in sin. It may not put a blemish on your face, but it puts one on your heart. Yes, Christ will forgive you when you repent, but have you ever noticed how some blemishes leave scars?

Real Change
Beauty takes work. Effort. Maintenance. Outward beauty is nice, but it's also fleeting. Inward beauty, however, can always increase and become more natural — more of who you really are in Christ, instead of something applied, pulled back, worked off or held in.

So, is it time for a makeover? If you're like me and almost everyone else I know, there's always room for some polish, a little more color or a refining touch or two to the personality. Go for it! Do whatever it takes to be like Jesus.

Just as it's worth it to spend some time on your outward appearance, it'll be worth seeing and living the results of God's beauty inside you!

Sodom & Gomorrah

here's the scoop. check it out :)

.. the bargaining ..

the LORD said, "The outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is so great and their sin so grievous that I will go down and see if what they have done is as bad as the outcry that has reached me. If not, I will know."

... Then Abraham approached [the Lord] and said: "Will you sweep away the righteous with the wicked? What if there are fifty righteous people in the city? Will you really sweep it away and not spare the place for the sake of the fifty righteous people in it? Far be it from you to do such a thing—to kill the righteous with the wicked, treating the righteous and the wicked alike. Far be it from you! Will not the Judge of all the earth do right?"

The LORD said, "If I find fifty righteous people in the city of Sodom, I will spare the whole place for their sake."

Then Abraham spoke up again: "Now that I have been so bold as to speak to the Lord, though I am nothing but dust and ashes, 28 what if the number of the righteous is five less than fifty? Will you destroy the whole city because of five people?"
"If I find forty-five there," he said, "I will not destroy it."

Once again he spoke to him, "What if only forty are found there?"
He said, "For the sake of forty, I will not do it."

Then he said, "May the Lord not be angry, but let me speak. What if only thirty can be found there?"
He answered, "I will not do it if I find thirty there."

Abraham said, "Now that I have been so bold as to speak to the Lord, what if only twenty can be found there?"
He said, "For the sake of twenty, I will not destroy it."

Then he said, "May the Lord not be angry, but let me speak just once more. What if only ten can be found there?"
He answered, "For the sake of ten, I will not destroy it."

When the LORD had finished speaking with Abraham, he left, and Abraham returned home.

.. the outrage & the destruction ..

The two angels arrived at Sodom in the evening, and Lot (Abraham's brother-in-law) was sitting in the gateway of the city. When he saw them, he got up to meet them and bowed down with his face to the ground.

"My lords," he said, "please turn aside to your servant's house. You can wash your feet and spend the night and then go on your way early in the morning."
"No," they answered, "we will spend the night in the square."

But he insisted so strongly that they did go with him and entered his house. He prepared a meal for them, baking bread without yeast, and they ate. Before they had gone to bed, all the men from every part of the city of Sodom—both young and old—surrounded the house. They called to Lot, "Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us so that we can have sex with them."

Lot went outside to meet them and shut the door behind him and said, "No, my friends. Don't do this wicked thing...

"Get out of our way," they replied. And they said, "This fellow came here as an alien, and now he wants to play the judge! We'll treat you worse than them." They kept bringing pressure on Lot and moved forward to break down the door.

But the men inside (the angels) reached out and pulled Lot back into the house and shut the door. Then they struck the men who were at the door of the house, young and old, with blindness so that they could not find the door.

The two men said to Lot, "Do you have anyone else here—sons-in-law, sons or daughters, or anyone else in the city who belongs to you? Get them out of here, because we are going to destroy this place. The outcry to the LORD against its people is so great that he has sent us to destroy it."

So Lot went out and spoke to his sons-in-law, who were pledged to marry his daughters. He said, "Hurry and get out of this place, because the LORD is about to destroy the city!" But his sons-in-law thought he was joking.

With the coming of dawn, the angels urged Lot, saying, "Hurry! Take your wife and your two daughters who are here, or you will be swept away when the city is punished."

When he hesitated, the men grasped his hand and the hands of his wife and of his two daughters and led them safely out of the city, for the LORD was merciful to them. As soon as they had brought them out, one of them said, "Flee for your lives! Don't look back, and don't stop anywhere in the plain! Flee to the mountains or you will be swept away!"

But Lot said to them, "No, my lords, please! Your servant has found favor in your eyes, and you have shown great kindness to me in sparing my life. But I can't flee to the mountains; this disaster will overtake me, and I'll die. Look, here is a town near enough to run to, and it is small. Let me flee to it—it is very small, isn't it? Then my life will be spared."

He said to him, "Very well, I will grant this request too; I will not overthrow the town you speak of. But flee there quickly, because I cannot do anything until you reach it." ...

...the sun had risen over the land. Then the LORD rained down burning sulfur on Sodom and Gomorrah—from the LORD out of the heavens. Thus he overthrew those cities and the entire plain, including all those living in the cities—and also the vegetation in the land. But Lot's wife looked back, and she became a pillar of salt.

Early the next morning Abraham got up and returned to the place where he had stood before the LORD. He looked down toward Sodom and Gomorrah, toward all the land of the plain, and he saw dense smoke rising from the land, like smoke from a furnace.

Tomorrow . . . I'll Do It Tomorrow

(fiction by Mary Brown)

I was lying across my unmade bed, listening to my new CD and skillfully ignoring the stack of schoolbooks on my desk.
"Kristi, Honey, there's someone here to see you."

Mom's voice drifted into my consciousness. I rolled over on my back and opened my eyes.

"Send 'em up, Mom," I said, figuring it was Janice, my best friend.

A few seconds later there was a tap tap tap on my door.

"C'mon in, door's open!" I yelled and reached over to turn down the volume on the stereo.

A familiar yet unexpected visitor came through the door. I jumped up from my bed, self-consciously smoothing my disheveled hair.

"Well, hi, gee, uh, I wasn't expecting you," I stammered and stared at my surprise caller.

"Hi, Kristi. Sorry to interrupt, but I hadn't heard from you for so long, and I wanted to touch base."

The voice was warm and friendly.

I reached over to straighten my bed, kicking yesterday's clothes under it. My visitor glanced around my room, and I became conscious of the clutter as I scurried to clear off a space.

"Here, sit on this chair," I said, flustered.

I took the stack of records from the chair and put them on the rumpled bed.

"How have you been, Kristi?"

"Uh, fine, yeah, OK. I meant to check in with you, but I've been so busy lately. I just got done with finals, basketball tryouts were last week, and our choir is getting ready to go on tour." I hurried through my list of excuses.

"I know," came the answer, "and I'm proud of all you're involved in."

Those eyes, so intense. I was unable to meet their gaze.

"I have a job for you, Kristi."

"That reminds me," I interrupted. "Remember the time you asked me to go to the nursing home and visit with the lady who fell and broke her hip? I didn't make it over to see her, but I heard she died, so I guess it didn't matter. I really meant to, but something came up. I can't remember exactly what."

My caller sat quietly, just listening. I nervously fiddled with my bracelet, wishing I'd known I was going to have a visitor.

I continued to hem and haw.

"If your project could wait a few weeks, I'll have more time and be able to help you. But right now, with all the things going on at school, I just don't know how I can do it."

"Kristi, I need this done immediately. It won't wait, and I was hoping you'd be able to help me."

"Honest, I'd like to, but I'm on overload already. You do understand, don't you?" I smiled apologetically, thinking I sounded convincing enough. Certainly I couldn't be expected to drop everything.

"Yes, I understand, but I have to be honest with you. It's disappointing, Kristi, that everything else is more important than our daily chats. I miss talking to you, and I wish you had time to do my work. I'm afraid this time I'll have to choose someone else for the job."

The tone of our conversation hadn't changed, but suddenly I felt so ashamed.

"Soon, real soon, we'll have those times together again. I promise!" I said, trying to sound sincere.

My guest got up to leave. I stood up to open the door and found an arm around my shoulder.

"I'm glad we had this time together."

"So am I. Thanks for coming by. I'll get back to you as soon as I have a minute."

"Goodbye, Kristi."

"Bye, God."

I closed the door and sighed heavily. Tomorrow. I'll have time for Him tomorrow. I took my English book off the desk and sat down to study.

Do You Really Love Him?

She has done a good work for Me
—Mark 14:6

If what we call love doesn’t take us beyond ourselves, it is not really love. If we have the idea that love is characterized as cautious, wise, sensible, shrewd, and never taken to extremes, we have missed the true meaning. This may describe affection and it may bring us a warm feeling, but it is not a true and accurate description of love.

Have you ever been driven to do something for God not because you felt that it was useful or your duty to do so, or that there was anything in it for you, but simply because you love Him? Have you ever realized that you can give things to God that are of value to Him? Or are you just sitting around daydreaming about the greatness of His redemption, while neglecting all the things you could be doing for Him? I’m not referring to works which could be regarded as divine and miraculous, but ordinary, simple human things— things which would be evidence to God that you are totally surrendered to Him. Have you ever created what Mary of Bethany created in the heart of the Lord Jesus? "She has done a good work for Me."

There are times when it seems as if God watches to see if we will give Him even small gifts of surrender, just to show how genuine our love is for Him. To be surrendered to God is of more value than our personal holiness. Concern over our personal holiness causes us to focus our eyes on ourselves, and we become overly concerned about the way we walk and talk and look, out of fear of offending God. ". . . but perfect love casts out fear . . ." once we are surrendered to God( 1 John 4:18 ).We should quit asking ourselves, "Am I of any use?" and accept the truth that we really are not of much use to Him. The issue is never of being of use, but of being of value to God Himself. Once we are totally surrendered to God, He will work through us all the time.
